Origins and History of Judaism
Judaism traces back to 2000 B.C.E. in Canaan, now known as the Israel and Palestine regions. Judaism traces back to the original covenant or agreement between Abraham and God. God promised that he would make them sacred people and he would give a holy land to his descendants if they worshipped him and were faithful.
The second covenant God made was 250 years later when Moses lead the people out of slavery in Egypt and to the holy land of Canaan. God gave the Jews the ten commandments and other rules to live by, giving them a religion to follow.
A major part of Jewish history is the Holocaust. In the 1930's and 1940's, Nazi Germany captured and killed over 6 million Jews throughout World War II. Jews were captured and imprisoned in concentration camps where they were often beaten and gassed. Many Jews also died from hunger or disease in these camps due to inhumane living conditions.
